As a teacher, how would you apply the strategy in the Art of teaching

by: Nicolasa L. Roco

For me, the most effective strategy to apply in the art of teaching is to know the learning levels of my pupils. I had been doing this strategy when I taught Grade II SPED LOW.

During the first few weeks of classes, I conducted a Diagnostic Test in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. In my class I had four levels of learners namely; Grade II, Grade I, K-2 and K-1. They were seated separately so that it will be easy for me to manage them. While the Grade II level were having reading and comprehension, the Grade I level were engaged in Mathematics exercises. I gave exercises in writing for the K-II, while I introduced sounds to the K-I and vice-versa. Whoever finished first, I gave them time for discussion and checking of their output. Varied activities for the levels were at hand to make sure there was continuity of learning. It was tiring on my part but when the non-readers were able to read by October, I felt utmost satisfaction on my teaching.

To make my strategy very effective I met the parents and explained to them my way of meeting the different needs of their children They cooperated with me. There were four mothers who came to the room everyday to prepare the snacks of the pupils. They cook tabirak, champorado, noodles, and many others. Before recess time came, the food of the children were already ready for serving. The strategy did not only treat the mal-nourished, at the same time attracted the pupils to be present everyday. This mothers also assisted me in maintaining the basic need of the children and even helped me checked the work of the pupils.

Of course, my principal knew about the program and with great delight even helped me find donors to support my program. This was done in my class in Grade II, slow learners and the result was very satisfactory.

When I was assigned to teach Grade VI-I, I still applied leveling. This time my work was lesser because the pupils were responsible. Every time I gave formative test on the subjects I taught, those who got 75% bellow were left in the room for reinforcement. I did not allow them to leave the room unless they got good grades on another set of formative test. I informed the parents about the scheme at hand during the meeting and they had no objection.

Giving material rewards was another strategy I applied for my Grade VI pupils. For those who got high scores in the periodical tested will receive something from me. I showed to them the gifts they were about to receive before the test no wonder that more than one half on the class got perfect and there was a 100% passing score.

As a teacher my dedication to my profession is a great help for my pupils. I spent meaningful times with them and I also let them feel that they are loved and they belonged.
